Educational initiatives in terms of the project "Raising public awareness through environmental education for sustainable development and volunteer biomonitoring of the river Zlatna Panega - Adopt a River"
Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe - Branch Bulgaria in collaboration with the cement plant "Zlatna Panega Cement" JSC launched a series of educational initiatives to raise awareness of the ecological status of the rivers located near industrial plants.
The target group of the initiatives are the pupils from the primary school "Lyuben Karavelov" in Zlatna Panega Village and the primary school "Hristo Botev" in Rumyantsevo Village.
During the first educational initiative held on June 4th, 2015 visited were karst spring "Glava Panega" and the hydroelectric power plant "Rumyantsevo". The pupils had the opportunity to learn about the changes in the riverbed of Zlatna Panega that occurred as a result of the anthropogenic activities. An expedition was conducted. It included a detour of the dams and fish passages, as well as discussions with the participants in order to increase their environmental awareness and responsibility from an early age.
The second educational initiative took place on October 16, 2015, when the network of environmental clubs in the region was extended with the establishment of a new one at the primary school "Hristo Botev" in Rumyantsevo Village. In the course of the event is projected an environmental short film presenting the idea of the project entitled "Adopt the River Zlatna Panega". There is a Tree of Ideas through which the pupils from the newly founded club will be able to share their ideas for the protection of the river. The event was also attended by members of the eco-club established in December 2014 at the primary school "Lyuben Karavelov" in Zlatna Panega Village. They shared the experience of their current activities for biodiversity conservation along the river Zlatna Panega.
