Building and reinforcing environmental bridges between Europe and the MENA region

The efforts of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe to build environmental cooperation between Europe and the MENA region reached another pivotal success. At the beginning of October 2015 a delegation led by the Executive Director of REC - Martha Bonifert, met with the Tunisian Minister of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources and Fisheries - Saad Seddik, in terms of the Water SUM project.

Minister Seddik emphasized the negative consequences of climate change concerning the water resources in Tunisia, which are characterized by sudden quantitative and typological differences.

After the initial meeting with Minister Seddik, the WATER SUM project team met with some of the key representatives of the water sector in Tunisia. In response to the specific objectives of the project modules WATER POrT and WATER WaSe, the experts accompanied by the Tunisian public authorities visited selected demonstration sites.

The REC branch in Bulgaria participates in the project WATER SUM by providing expertise in monitoring and water quality preservation.

The next mission of the team of REC in MENA region is planned for the last week of October 2015 when there will be an exploration of demonstration sites in Jordan.
